Frequently Asked Questions

Herbal Tinctures FAQs - Matriarch Herbs

1. What is an herbal extract?

An herbal extract, also known as a tincture, is made by soaking plant material in alcohol and water in order to draw out the active constituents. I use a high proof Non-GMO Project Verified Cane Alcohol as the solvent and steep each extract for a minimum of six weeks. I then hand press each extract to yield a concentrated and convenient liquid that contains all of the plant’s medicinal properties. See my journal entry: What is a Tincture?

2. How do I take an herbal extract?

Herbal extracts are strong in taste and most people prefer to put them in a small amount of water or juice. They can also be taken directly from dropper to mouth.

3. What is the shelf life of the herbal extracts?

The extracts are good for up to five years. Keep them out of the sun and away from heat.

4. Is it safe to use herbal extracts while breastfeeding?

All of the herbs in my formulas are safe to use while breastfeeding. Because the extracts are so concentrated, you will only take a small amount, which means the alcohol you consume will be minimal. It is recommended you consult with your healthcare provider before taking any herbal products. See my journal entry: Herbs to Boost Your Milk Supply.

5. What is herbal body oiling?

Herbal body oiling is the simple act of rubbing herbal infused oils into your skin. I created our body oil and breast oil to help moms take in the healing properties of herbs while hydrating their skin. Herbal body oiling calms the nervous system and gives you a chance to check in with your body. Read my journal entry: What is Herbal Body Oiling?

6. Why should I schedule a Holistic Health Consultation?

A holistic health consultation is for anyone looking to discuss specific health issues and have a customized herbal formula made for them based on their health concerns. You’ll spend an hour talking with me about all areas of your life- physical, mental, and emotional. Work, home life, medical history, diet, and lifestyle will all be taken into consideration, so I can create a formula that helps you holistically. Consultations can be held in person if you are in the San Diego area or virtually. Read my journal entry: What is a Holistic Health Consultation?

7. Are Holistic Health Consultations only for Postpartum Women?

No! I am happy to work with everyone, whether you have a child or not.

8. Where did founder Laci Silva study Herbalism?

I completed the clinical herbalist certificate program at the Self-Heal School of Herbal Studies and Healing.

9. How far into the postpartum period can I use your products?
My products are for the initial postpartum period and beyond, which means you can use them for as long as you like. I believe they are helpful for at least the first year after giving birth. Listen to your body and see how you feel.
